The deal is closed in chat — now the money. Most sellers just type their UPI ID. It works, until it doesn't. Here are the three ways to collect payment in a WhatsApp conversation, and when each one is right.
How it works: "Pay to mystore@okhdfcbank and send the screenshot."
Fine for an occasional order from a known customer. Not a system.
How it works: your payment provider (Razorpay and others) generates a link for an exact amount; the buyer taps it and pays by UPI, card or netbanking; you get an automatic confirmation.
How it works: instead of a bare payment link, you send the product or cart link from your own store. The buyer picks the item, enters their address, chooses UPI/card or COD, and pays — and your system records the order, reserves the stock, and issues the GST invoice automatically.
| Situation | Use |
|---|---|
| Repeat customer, small amount, you know them | UPI ID is fine |
| New customer, prepaid, no website yet | Payment link |
| New customer, wants COD | Checkout link (COD needs an order system) |
| Any order where you'd need the address anyway | Checkout link — the buyer types it, error-free |
Can customers pay directly inside WhatsApp?
In practice, Indian sellers collect via a UPI ID typed in chat, a payment link, or a checkout link to their store — all completed in the buyer's UPI/payment app. WhatsApp's own in-chat payments have had limited availability and most business payments run on links.
What do payment links cost in India?
Typical gateway pricing is around 2% + GST for cards/netbanking, with UPI often cheaper or free — providers change rates, so check the current schedule. Typed UPI is free but leaves no order record or invoice.
How do I avoid payment screenshot fraud?
Never treat a screenshot as proof. Confirm the credit in your own bank or payment dashboard before shipping, and never "refund an overpayment" you have not verified receiving.
Do I need a website to take COD orders from WhatsApp?
Effectively yes — COD needs an order record, an address captured correctly and delivery tracking. A checkout link from your store does all three; a chat message does none.
Manva stores take UPI, cards and COD through your own Razorpay account, capture the address, and issue the GST invoice automatically.
