How to Sell on WhatsApp in India (2026)

Catalog, UPI, COD, order flow — and the point where manual selling breaks, plus what to do about it.

Why WhatsApp is India's real storefront

Roughly 15 million Indian businesses run on WhatsApp Business, and for most small sellers it's where the actual selling happens — the website is the catalog, WhatsApp is the counter. This guide covers the full setup in 2026: Business app, catalog, payments, order flow, and the automation layer that stops it eating your whole day.

Step 1 — WhatsApp Business, set up properly

  • Use the free WhatsApp Business app (not your personal account): business name, category, hours, address, and a catalog.
  • Write a greeting message and quick replies for the questions you'll get daily ("price?", "COD hai?", "delivery kitne din?").
  • Put your wa.me link (wa.me/91XXXXXXXXXX) everywhere — Instagram bio, website, packaging.

Step 2 — A catalog buyers can browse

Two levels: the in-app WhatsApp catalog (fine for 10–30 items; see the catalog setup guide), and — better as you grow — your own website as the catalog, with WhatsApp as the conversation. A link to a real store answers price/size/stock questions before they're asked, takes UPI payment, and issues a GST invoice; a photo-forwarded catalog can't.

Step 3 — Taking payments

  • UPI is king: share your UPI ID or (better) a payment link/checkout on your own store so payment and order stay connected.
  • COD: offer it — a large share of first-time buyers outside metros insist — but track your COD return rate; it's the silent margin killer (calculate yours).
  • Avoid "screenshot pe bharosa": a real checkout removes payment disputes.

Step 4 — The order flow that doesn't eat your day

Manual WhatsApp selling breaks at ~10 orders/day: stock questions, address collection, payment confirmation, courier updates. The fix is connecting WhatsApp to your store so the machine does the boring half:

  • Buyer sees the product on your site → pays UPI or picks COD → you get the order with address, no back-and-forth.
  • You reply "ship 2 AWB123" on WhatsApp → buyer is notified with tracking automatically.
  • Abandoned checkouts get a recovery email with a tap-to-apply coupon — money you'd otherwise never see.

Step 5 — Selling TO people without spamming them

  • Status is your shop window: new stock, behind-the-scenes, offers — daily, free, non-intrusive.
  • Broadcast lists (buyers who saved your number) for launches and festival offers — one clear offer, not daily blasts.
  • Festival timing: Diwali, Rakhi and Eid weeks convert multiples of normal weeks. Ready-to-send Hinglish messages: festival message generator.

Step 6 — The 2026 upgrade: an assistant on YOUR side of the chat

Everything above still leaves you as the operator. The new layer is an AI assistant in your own WhatsApp that runs the shop with you: send a product photo — it becomes a live listing; ask "aaj ke orders?" — real numbers; it notices six unpublished products and offers to publish them; you reply yes and it's done. That's Manva's WhatsApp Business Assistant — Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi included.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell on WhatsApp without a website?

Yes — app + catalog + UPI ID works at small volume. The ceiling arrives around 10 orders/day: address collection, payment matching and stock questions eat the day. A store link keeps WhatsApp as the conversation and moves the paperwork to the machine.

Is WhatsApp Business free?

The Business app is free. Costs appear when you use the Business API/BSPs for bulk messaging — most small sellers never need that; Status + broadcasts + a store link cover 90% of it.

How do I take UPI payments on WhatsApp safely?

Best: a checkout/payment link tied to the order (your store does this automatically). Direct UPI-ID transfers work but disconnect payment from order details, causing disputes.

Will customers mind buying from a website instead of chat?

They still buy 'in chat' — the link opens, they pay, they come back to the conversation. What changes is that sizes, prices, stock and address stop being twenty messages.
